Maplewood Karate & Kickboxing

Just wanted to announce that Maplewood Karate now has kickboxing 7 times a week, Monday, Wednesday and Fridays 9:30 am to 10:30 am, Monday and Wednesday 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm, Thursday's 8:00 pm and Sundays 1:00 pm

Tiny spiders wait on the sideline for the roses to flower, and then they dig in, destroying what I have tended for a year with fertilizers, food, pruning, training, etc.. This rose is next to my front door, so I see it every day. It flowered in the past two days, and in the past two days these tiny spiders have gorged themselves on the leaves. I think it's spiders. What do you think? how can I get rid of them? I used to get this soapy spray from Smith and Hawken that used to kill them, but now that plant shop is gone. In a few days I will have twigs and all the leaves will be gone.

The MOL "Free to a Good Home" (Freecycle) Thread

To make it easier for MOLers to keep materials out of landfills, would it be useful to have a category where people could post about materials that they prefer to give rather than throw away? We all know that one person's trash is another person's treasure.

The MOL Classified section currently accomodates this, but classified sections traditionally carry items for sale, where people go when they have a specific need. How about having a "Free" category right here in the posting section - think how easy it would be to find something that maybe you didn't even realize you needed while arguing furiously here? : )

Most importantly, it would serve as another vehicle to keep materials out of landfills. I think it would be a great community service and add even more value to the posting section. MOL goes green!

Hi folks,
We were gratified by how quickly so many folks jumped on our humble offerings. I asked for PMs only and this worked extremely well. PMs are stacked in order received so there was no confusion as to who was first. This also reduced the number of msgs on main page. Several people mentioned that they had been/were searching ... This evening several other people mentioned on the main Freecycle thread that they were ISO... and their search was ended.
Given all this I've decided to start this "ISO" thread.

OK-- normally I wouldn't post for your thoughts or advice about Bella (35lb beagle) and Simone (65+lb Boxer/AmStaf) having a tiff. They do this on a daily basis, with Bella coming out the winner every time until today.

This morning all the seemingly harmless fighting came to a head. It started Thursday night, when they had to be separated by force. Bella seemed to be the instigator.

The Thursday night fight was over an empty bowl (which had white rice in it). Bella was sick, so I gave her some rice to settle her stomach. She ate it, and Simone came over to check out her bowl. Bella was nasty and started snapping and growling. Usually Simone would back off from this behavior but she did not. It took 2 of us to get them apart.

Friday was not much better with little tiffs breaking out between the girls over NOTHING.

This morning all 3 dogs were restless, and having little break-out fights over nothing. Simone being the main "actor" in the fights. I thought they needed some outside time.

Instead of a long walk, I took them to my neighbors fenced-in yard so they could run free and get some of that energy out. Everything was going fine. About 15 minutes into the appropriate play and run time, Bella snapped at Simone and Simone attacked her. When say attack, I mean, she grabbed Bella by the neck and just started shaking her. Bella broke free and went right back after Simone. The fight lasted about 30 seconds.

My neighbor came out to see if he could help me separate them.

The end result was Simone's mouth bleeding, and Bella with blood all over the left side of her face, blood spitting out of her mouth, and nose.

This has NEVER happened before. Neither dog has ever been bleeding after a fight.

Simone has a tiny nick on her outer jowl, but it seems OK. After washing all the blood off Bella I found a tiny lacerations on her forehead, scratches on the inside part of her ear and a 1/4" gash in the cartilage on the upper outside part of her ear. The scratches inside her ear were bleeding so bad, I thought they were MUCH worse than they turned out to be.

Thoughts for solution, or cause, so I can prevent this from happening again?

I grew up with a transistor radio fixed to my ear at night, but that didnt let me experience the range of music that was available. It sort of gave me a top 40 feel and most music fell short. Rock was king in my world until unexpectedly in the late 60's, early 70's I was exposed to the sound of R&B that felt good.

I've been having fun contributing on those "best of" threads, but I wanted to share some of the music that is a part of my experiences.

Its easy to pick out popular R&B groups and artists from the current era or from the era I am talking about. Everyone knows the Temptations and the Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye and Luther Vandross. I'm not really going to focus on those mainstream artists too much. I'm not talking about todays stars like Ne-yo, Chris Brown or John Legend. These guys all owe their fame to groups like Blue Magic, the Stylistics, and too many others to list.

I may be in my mid-30's, but moving here from a major city leaves me wondering if there are ANY place here to have a drink that plays some semi-hip music and has a young-ish clientele? All I can think is maybe in Montclair this exists or I just have to suck it up and count on NYC for my music fill. I am an indie rocker, cannot deal with the pop music...anyone, anyone???

In an effort to make things easier to find I will be rearranging most of the photo's in this blog and placing them in specific categories. For example all the house numbers will be in one section while all the garden stakes and other items will each have a category of their own also. When I started this it was to get as many of my pieces out there for people to see but thanks to some very helpful feedback I see now that maybe that wasn't the best thing to do. The guitarist Andy Aledort will join The Big in China band when we return to our favorite little New York dive, Uncle Mike's in South Tribeca this Friday, May 18.

Andy, my longtime friend and colleague at Guitar World magazine, has spent the last decade in Dickey Betts' Great Southern and has also played with Buddy Guy, Band of Gypsys, Double Trouble, Steve Vai, Johnny Winter, Joe Perry, the Allman Brothers at the Beacon and many others. He was also the musical director of the first couple of Experience Hendrix Tribute tours.
